In the week or so that we’ve been helping spread the word about “Place In This World”, I’ve been focused on the “hit” aspect of the song. It was such a huge song in the early 90s…top 5 on pop radio which means it was EVERYWHERE in culture for a number of years. It was a true hit. It has deep nostalgia for a ton of people and it’s objectively a GREAT song for anyone who hears it.
However, yesterday on the fK&C + MWS zoom event, Luke Smallbone mentioned something we thought was quite profound about this song. Our current culture is wandering around (scrolling around) looking for belonging…for their place in this world. This is happening at insane scale every day with each generation…not just young people. We’re faced with comparison at every moment on socials. Do I measure up? Where do I fit in? Your radio station offers the answer…we fit in with the Savior of the world. We belong in God’s Kingdom because of the finished work of Jesus on the cross. Our true place in this world is alongside our Risen Savior. This song offers hope to the millions and millions of people who aren’t sure about their lives and where they belong. It’s bigger than a “hit” at this point.
We’re roaming through the night to find a place on your playlist and that DOES NOT have to be in current. If you’re unsure about what to do with it, put it in a gold or recurrent category for a few weeks and then put it in research. If you believe in pre-testing it, do that. Find somewhere to put it so you can figure out what your audience wants to do with the song. Those few plays could make a massive difference for the people who hear the song and could reveal something significant about this song for your radio station.
