The Song Story
“The Darkness Didn’t Know” brings Presence Music together with Joel Vaughn and Avenue Music for a contemporary Christian song about the Light of Christ overcoming grief and apparent defeat. Written three days after Leah Monson lost her brother, the song follows Jesus from Bethlehem to the cross and empty tomb, showing that darkness could not understand the redemptive story God was writing. It acknowledges suffering without offering an easy answer and reminds listeners that grief, death, and darkness do not get the final word.

Building on the success of their 2025 Christmas single, which received airplay on SiriusXM, Presence Music is entering a major new season with “The Darkness Didn’t Know,” featuring Joel Vaughn and Avenue Music. The song is the band’s first release to receive a major national radio-promotion campaign through Radio 55 Promotions, led by Josh Lauritch, whose work includes Elevation Worship and Forrest Frank. Presence Music is also touring nationwide alongside Mark Schultz, Britt Nicole, and Warren Peay, further establishing the band as a growing national presence in Christian music.
In 2026, Presence Music dedicated 100 days to music, touring, and ministry across the country. The band is signed to New Release Today Music, with distribution through Syntax Creative, booking through Aligned Talent, and public relations through Kingdom Impact Group. The Darkness Didn’t Know (Lyrics)
The Darkness Didn’t Know
Written by Jonathan C. Smith, Leah Monson, Brandon Monson, Haley Kemp, Kasey Kemp
Verse 1
The darkness could not comprehend
This newborn baby’s cries
That filled the streets of Bethlehem
And pierced the silent night
The darkness could not comprehend
The meaning of this Child
Why humble shepherds and angels praise
A babe so tender and mild
Chorus
What the darkness didn’t know
Was a King was laid in a manger throne
What the darkness didn’t know
Was a Light was born to give us hope
From manger to the grave
He was writing a story
The darkness didn’t know
Verse 2
The darkness could not comprehend
Why the only Son of God
Would lay aside His royal crown
And trade it for a cross
Verse 3
The darkness could not comprehend
How a stone-cold grave could be
The place where life would shine its light
Declaring victory
Final chorus variation
What the darkness didn’t know
Was the Light would roll away the stone
From manger to the grave
He was writing a story
The darkness didn’t know
