The Story Behind “Sparrows”

Hey, what’s up guys, Cory Asbury here!

I remember as a young man being so afraid of the future so afraid of what it might look like. Would I have a family? Would I have children? Would I be able to take care of them? You know all the stressors that we encounter in life. And I remember even as a young man before marriage and family those things were on my mind and in my heart, causing you know stress, and anxiety, and worry. And I would meditate on this scripture Matthew 6:25. And I’m just going to read a few of the verses.

“For this reason, I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory was clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith!”

Serious indictment there at the end, you of little faith! When I really considered the lilies, how they don’t do anything. The grass of the field doesn’t do anything yet God takes care of it. Allows it to grow and prosper. Consider the birds of the air again, nothing of themselves is getting them into right standing or being taken care of by the Father, the Father is just so good that he takes care of them. So I started to think about myself, as the scripture says, am I not of more value than the sparrow? Than the lillies? Than the birds of the air? And I went oh my gosh, I’m a son of God, I’m a child of God. He takes care of me, even more than he does these things listed in these scriptures. And things began to make sense. My heart began to calm. It was meditating on those scriptures and those ideas that really began to change my heart into understanding my almost stature before the Lord – I’m held. I am a Son, I am a child. And that’s a totally different reality than just thinking we got to make it on our own.

You know, again all those stresses in life especially in what we’re dealing with right now with coronavirus, and all of the racial tensions, etc. To be reminded of his fatherhood, that he is first and foremost Father.

When Jesus taught the disciples how to pray in Matthew, he says pray like this, “Abba, Father, Who Art in Heaven”. It’s reminding ourselves of that reality, that we are held, that we are adored, that we are taken care of. No matter what it looks like, you know the lyric in the song Sparrows “we are carried in his love, no matter what it looks like”. And uh, that has been a very helpful reminder to me in this season and I hope that it’s done some of the same for you, for you who listen, for the listeners that tune into you guys.

Thank you for helping me get this message of hope, and of peace, and the love of God out to people. Hope it blesses you guys! Alright! Peace, see ya!
